All About My Aviary:

Welcome!

Difference

What Makes Us Different From Every Other Aviary?

Our aviary is upheld to the highest standard; the care of our babies, parents, socialization, exercise, cleanliness, and so much more. We don't look at our birds as just birds, but members of our family and they deserve our up most respect.

Here at Brighter Days Aviary, we do things the best way that we see fit for every resident in our home; babies and parents alike. Here are just a few:

  • Most aviaries let their babies go when they have just weaned. Sometimes these babies, when brought into their new home, won't eat the food they were weaned on and may regress into begging for handfeedings. Here at Brighter Days Aviary, we keep our babies until they are at least 10 weeks old, 2 weeks longer than other aviaries to ensure they are completely and fully weaned and will not regress to begging for handfeedings when brought into their new home. We ensure they are physically and psychologically ready to move into their new home with no issues. (For more information please see our weaning process)

  • Our babies are socialized, socialized, socialized! They are socialized with everyone in our family daily and visitors that come to our home. They will leave Brighter Days Aviary with confidence in themselves and have trust in us, humans.

  • We let our babies fly the whole time they are with us. We let them develop confidence in their flying capabilities and let them explore their surrounding a few feet higher than they would when they are on their feet!

  • We also build them the foundation to come - or fly -  when called. Most of our babies leave knowing to come when called - which can mean life or death in certain startling situation.

  • All our babies are very well mannered. We constantly give our babies positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior and deter bad behavior.

  • Since they stay with us longer than other aviaries we know their personality more and can help you find your perfect new best friend that will fit wonderfully in your home!

  • We are there with you every step of the way and offer lifetime advice, help, and guidance. We also offer pet sitting whenever you are out of town for your baby.

These are just a few distinguishing factors! You are welcome to read more about how we do things below! :)

Hand Feeding & The Weaning Process:

All our handfed babies are removed from the nest at around 11-14 days. I never take the babies out earlier unless absolutely necessary, a case where it would be is if the mother abandons the babies. The first few weeks of a babies life is very critical; this is when the parents pass on important antibodies and strengthen the babies' immune systems. We hand feed all our babies with a specially designed hand feeding spoon, I have noticed this method is best when weaning a sweet, tame, pet baby bird. When we start hand feeding each baby we start the process of selecting and understanding each bird’s nature and personality. We also practice abundance weaning:

The phrase "abundance weaning" describes the way that most reputable bird breeders wean the baby birds that they hand feed. In abundance weaning, the breeders continue to give the chicks handfeedings while offering them solid foods to try, such as millet and softened pellets. The birds are allowed to stay on handfeedings until they themselves decide that they are ready to eat solid foods and drink water on their own. Most breeders agree that abundance weaning techniques lead to birds with more stable physical and psychological health. Abundance weaning is the most healthy way to wean your baby bird.

Not only do we use this method in weaning our baby birds but we also give them an unlimited variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains, added upon seeds, millet, and pellets. We keep them in our aviary a little bit longer than other breeders to make sure they are fully weaned. This time consuming and continuous effort is the secret to weaning a super friendly bird!

Socialization & Exploration:

The moment the babies get pulled from the nest for hand feeding is when the socialization process starts. All our babies get daily one on one interaction. They get use to us; our touch, the sound of our voice, the smell of our skin, and the sight of us every day, multiple times a day. When we are not around to handle the babies, we leave the radio or T.V on so they can have some company. At around 3-4 weeks old the babies start to get curious about their surroundings. We take this time to start introducing pellets, fruits, vegetables, grains, and premium seeds to start them off on the weaning process the right way. When the babies fledge, or start flying (around 5 weeks old) we spend more one on one time with each of them and do certain exercises and activities to help strengthen their flying capabilities. We let them out to our screened in porch and let them fly around and play with the other birds. We also start working with them to come when called. We also give positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior and deter bad behavior.

When it is time to move them to a large flight cage we provide them with a plethora of toys, snacks, and different sizes and textures of perches. Toys and perches are always rotated every 3 days to keep them happy and interested.

Care of The Parents:

The best babies come from the best parents. We make sure that our parent Lovebirds get the best nutrition; we give them a variety of fruits, vegetables, pellets, millet, and seeds. We also try to mimic their natural habitat as much as possible and tend to their natural instincts by letting them forage for their food, provide them nesting material to build their own nests, and also providing them access to birdie baths 24/7. We have at least 3 different toys in their cages at all times and they get rotated weekly to keep the parent Lovebirds happy no matter the season.

We only breed our birds twice a year and give them at least 5 months in between clutches. We make sure each and every one of our parent Lovebirds are able to and are in the best shape to breed. We never give our birds more than they can handle and always retire our birds from breeding at around the ages of 5-8 years old.

We like to keep our flock's genetics diverse and our birds are never in bred. Every pair is not related to each other what so ever.
